“Telling Lies”

Lies, lies, lies……That lingered around us, within us, anywhere and everywhere. When is the time of assurance that we are on the covered shell of truth? Genuine and on the state of self composure.
We sometimes neglect write side of everything upon layed situations, and choose to be foolish by having its wrong way. Temptations, fears, egos, these are only some of those aspects that triggers more the illusions of lies. A funny thought came, that if a person is expertly doing and telling, all kinds of lies. A time will come he or she can no longer speak out of the truth, because it would be peculiar and in the sense of unwanted scenario. A saying which concepts that “the truth will set you free” should always be the bases and inspirations, because of you can only have happiness and contentment if you are free from worries, and has clear thought and at look in everything.

The Misunderstood in Society

Nowadays, many teenagers are behaving strangely according to the society rules. Some are doing what th society dictates to be wrong. They are doing what their parents prohibits them to do. But why they are doing it? What are the reasons? Do parents can make something to stop this?

There are many reasons why there is so called 'teenage rebellion' in our society. Basically, people tend to blame the parents of these teenager. But why they are blaming the parents? That's because the parents are the molder of their children. But because of wrong guild, the children cross the wrong way. Parents should take care of their children. They have to gibe time and attention.

Some of these teenager, having a very busy parents, do not have a guiding hand in life. We cannot blame the parents because they are doing that to provide a good future for their children. These teenagers tend to make drastic action for their parents to notice them. To say that 'hey parents!I'm here'. Because their parents cannot give them the attention they need, they find it in friends or peers.

Friends cannot easily find. It takes time for a friendship to grow. So these teenager look for peers whom will take them, embrace them of what they are. They are lucky if the peer they got were good. But commonly, they landed on the wrong group. Some of these peers will ask or recruite them to join fraternity. They will say that 'you can be protected' if you join. The teenager, needing a protection, their parents cannot give, will b tempted to join. In here, they will learn to smoke, to drink, and to use prohibited drugs just to please their peers. Pleasing their peer to the point of doing what is prohibited . Because they thinking that their peer will always be there.

But that problem can be avoided. In family, there should be communication. For parents, whether there are busy, should give time. A time where all the member of the family are lacking. A teenager, as a person, with brain to know what is right and what is wrong, should also have to understand that their parents are busy and in doing wrong to themselves it not only your parents they are hurting but also themselves.

TOPIC: TYPHOONS

(by: Jessica Mae C. Eva BSA - 2b)

A GREAT DEVASTATION

Devastation, a destruction, destroying of things, a great danger that everyone can never escape. At present, Global Warming devastation has been overshadowed by other major problems of the world such as the Financial Crisis, hitting the global economy. People are slowly forgetting the major causes and effects of this natural phenomena. Global Warming slowly setbacks to the world financial crisis and many environmental enthusiasts are concerned that the global financial crisis could result in the turn down in the fight against this natural calamity.

Typhoon is one of the major effect of global warming. Every year, typhoons seem to be much stronger as it hit countries it passes by. The Philippines, an archipelago in the central part of Southeast Asia and lies in the Western Pacific Area, is located along the typhoon prone area of the world. Being a country on the western part of the Pacific Ocean, it could never escaped the monster - like typhoons that are annually visiting it. These typhoons come from the Marianas area in the Pacific Ocean. But what is a typhoon? How do it form? When you say typhoon, it is a weather disturbance which consists of strong winds and rain. It usually have a maximum wind of at least 120 kilometers per hour. A very strong wind, that is why the word where the term typhoon came from which is a Chinese word "taifun" means great wind. Typhoon is a result of the fusion of the hot sea water and cold air above the sea. This fusion will result to an active Low Pressure Area and while it is in water, it continuously acquires great pressure coming from the heat of the sea water and thus, transforming into a tropical depression until it became a full - developed typhoon.

Different countries have different terminologies in calling this natural phenomena. In the part of Western Pacific Area, it is called typhoon or storms while on the opposite side of the world, they usually call it hurricane or cyclone. Nevertheless, these refer to only one type of natural calamity which is typhoon. In the Philippines, an average of 20 typhoons every year has been recorded by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Space Administration, a government agency which is in charged of the meteorological aspects in the country. Out of these 20, a maximum of 3 typhoons are considered strong type or super typhoons. Why super typhoons? Because they usually have the strongest winds and largest destruction with them.
Recently, the most destructive typhoon ever recorded is Super Typhoon Reming which hit the Philippines 3 years ago. On all of the regions of the country, Bicol Peninsula, was the one greatly affected by the said typhoon. Albay, in particular, suffered the greatest loss, not only economically, but also on human lives. What causes this devastation? No other than, the majestic Mayon Volcano. Before the typhoon devastation, the majestic Mayon erupted two months before. The eruption disbursed pyroclastic materials such as volcanic blocks, sands and magma. After the eruption, these pyroclastic materials were intact at the slopes of Mayon and when the typhoon passes through Mayon Volcano, it swept all the pyroclastic materials from the slope burrying the towns of Albay which are on the slope of the mountain. Albay turned into a ghost town because of the almost 5 - meter mudslides. Houses were buried to the ground and many lives were killed. Almost thousands of families mourned because of the great devastation that they suffered. But we all know, it's nature's will. We can never resist the occurrence of this tragedy but we can do a lot to help save our home , the Mother Earth in order to lessen the risk of this kind of nightmare.

Transformers, M.D.

Choosing your lifetime career is a commitment itself, and pursuing it is a battle. When you become that career-person you have been dreaming of, it feels so fulfilling, and you would consider the battle worthwhile. Aspirants of becoming a doctor of medicine undergo long years of study and hardship even from their pre-medicine courses. It may take a minimum of eight years before being proclaimed as one of the legitimate doctors or physicians in the country. However, because of the economic instability of the Philippines, only a few of the physicians and specialists feel satisfied with the money they bring home from work. Furthermore, not all doctors are in practice, public or private. This, probably, is because of rampant need of nurses. Another is not all people could afford to pay even a check-up fee. Though these doctors could help impoverished communities through medical mission, they are still governed by the fact that labor become more productive through wages.

With the flimsy chance of receiving higher salary through public or even private practice, doctors become modern-day real-life transformers, who seek for greener pastures overseas. Though they have to enroll to another course a little different from the current one, these professionals are willing to take risks and give up their titles as M.D. to be among those R.N.'s. Maybe, they were thinking, "At least i could provide my family's needs for the economy of the Philippines fluctuate along with its population rate increase". Salary is the primary reason for such transformation. Another is some counties offer more conducive place for practice. As what a speaker in a seminar shared to his audience, "in America, when you dial 911, you will immediately be given attention anytime of the day and whatever place you may be. So if I would experience heart attack, I know I would be brought to the hospital as soon as possible. Unlike in the Philippines..."

Words of Lies

One of the teachings of our elders and parents is that telling a lie is a bad thing to do. We were also taught by our teachers at school about telling the truth. We also learned from the Bible that lying is a mortal sin, but still we forget about it when we are at a situation where telling a lie is necessary.

As an individual, we sometimes lie about our wants, desires, status in life and sometimes we lie about how we feel. it is common for children to lie when they are at fault, but it is easy to read through their minds. Their eyes always show the truth. However, as for an adult, they already know what is wrong and what is right. Indeed, lying is necessary for adults, especially when they are at a difficult situation.

Lies are just words but sometimes leads to a bigger problem. A husband that is not true to his wife, when caught, will be filed with a case and be imprisoned. An employee who falsifies documents, when caught, will be filed with a case and may be block listed to other companies. A politician who lied about his true motives may be hated by his people. A criminal who didn't confessed for his sins will bring it in his conscience for eternal.

Sometimes we lie for us not to hurt the feelings of other people. We lie to cover up our own faults and to make excuses. We sometimes tell white lies to avoid offense when complimenting something or someone that we find unattractive. Sometimes we also lie to save someone or ourselves from getting involve to an awkward situation. Indeed, we lie because we are being driven by something to do such acts.

T
OPIC SENTENCE

  • Topic sentence is a primary perspective grammatical term used to describe usually, but not always the first sentence of the paragraph. It may come, for example, after a transition sentence; it may even come at the end of a paragraph. The topic sentence acts as a kind of summary and offers the reader an insightful view of the writer’s main ideas for the following paragraph. More than just being a mere summary, however, a topic sentence often provides a claim or an insight directly or indirectly related to the thesis. It adds cohesion to a paper and helps organize ideas both within the paragraph and the whole body of work at large.
  • Topic sentences are not the only way to organize a paragraph, and not all paragraphs need a topic sentence. For example, paragraphs that describe, narrate, or detail the steps in an experiment do not usually need topic sentences. Topic sentences are useful, however, in paragraphs that analyze and argue. Topic sentences are particularly useful for writers who have difficulty developing focused, unified paragraphs (i.e., writers who tend to sprawl). Topic sentences help these writers develop a main idea or claim for their paragraphs, and, perhaps most importantly, they help these writers stay focused and keep paragraphs manageable.
  • Topic sentences are also useful to readers because they guide them through sometimes complex arguments. Many well-known, experienced writers effectively use topic sentences to bridge between paragraphs.
  • A topic sentence is NOT simply a statement of fact. A fact does not contain any controlling ideas that can be easily explained, described, illustrated or analyzed.

TWO KINDS OF TOPIC SENTENCE:

1. A statement of opinion

  • A statement of opinion contains some form of judgment and the paragraph will support the opinion in the topic sentence.
Example

The computer is the greatest invention of the twentieth century.

2. A statement of intent

  • A statement of intent contains no opinion; instead, it informs the reader of what will be objectively explained in the paragraph.
Example

The common seasoning monosodium glutamate (MSG) has negative side effects.

TOPIC SENTENCE FUNCTION
:

An effective topic sentence:

  • Relates to the thesis.
  • Sets up a claim, assertion, argument, evaluation, analysis.

  • Contains controlling ideas about the topic that need to be developed in the sentences that follow.

  • Is the most general sentence in the paragraph.

  • Orients the reader.

  • Provides a context for understanding what follows.

  • Explains the relationships among elements.

  • Summarizes the rest of the paragraph.

  • Promises what will follow.

GUIDELINES FOR TOPIC SENTENCES:

  • A topic sentence must be a complete sentence to perform all the necessary functions.

Weak: Some types of birth control should be provided by schools.

Better: To prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, schools should provide every form of non-prescription birth control available.

  • A topic sentence must predict or promise what follows, so it cannot be a question.

Weak: Should schools provide free computers for their students?

Better: Since schools should assist students in their studies and prepare them for their future careers, they must offer students the technological advantage of free and easy access to computers.

  • Phrases such as “I think” or “in my opinion” may muddle or weaken topic sentences. Your writing is always your opinion, so you don’t need these phrases unless they are central to the idea that you are trying to convey.
Weak: I think that it is important for every woman to carry mace or pepper spray.

Better: As violent criminals take over the city streets, women must carry mace or pepper spray to protect themselves.

  • The topic sentence should provide clear relationships among all of its elements so that it can provide a framework for understanding the rest of the paragraph.
Weak: Historians record only dry statistics; we should read novels.

Better: Accurate historical novels give us a deeper understanding of the past than do the dry collection of facts and statistics that pass for history texts.

  • A topic sentence needs to be clear and specific, so that it can predict and summarize the rest of the paragraph for the reader.
Weak: Public transit is terrible.

Better: Incapable of providing reliable, comfortable service, the San Francisco Municipal Transit system is failing its ridership.

  • A topic sentence must be coherent so that the reader can use it as a key to the rest of the paragraph.
Weak: The differences of their socioeconomic classes, indeed, were not more potent than the already inherent differences among the population.

Better: Bosnia is split apart not by any economic class differences, but by racial and ethnic conflicts.

  • Because the topic sentence is a reference for the rest of the paragraph, it needs to be exceptionally clear. If there is figurative language in a topic sentence, the wording should be such that the reader does not need to understand the allusion to understand the sentence.
Weak: The Surgeon General must be the Hercules that slays the Hydra of chemical addictions.

Better: As Hercules slew Hydra, the Surgeon General must defeat the many-headed monster that is chemical addiction.

OTHER SENTENCE FUNCTIONS:

The rest of the paragraph must:

  • Fulfill the promise set by the topic sentence.

  • Be on the same topic.

  • Relate to each other and the topic sentence in a manner established by the topic sentence.

EXAMPLE OF TOPIC SENTENCE:

Essay Assignment:

We all have in our lives certain types of people we tend to avoid: aggressive types, “nosy” types, people who monopolize every conversation with talk about themselves, people who always seem to be bad-tempered. Identify one type of person you tend to avoid, and then, in a well-organized and well-developed essay, explain why you avoid that type of person.

Essay Skeleton # 1

Thesis: After having dated several of them, I have discovered that I want to avoid possessive boyfriends at all costs.

Topic Sentence: This kind of man always wants to set limits on how much time I can spend socializing with my female friends.

Topic Sentence: Possessive boyfriends can be counted on to display annoyance whenever I talk to my other male friends.

Topic Sentence: Besides being possessive, such males can also be incredibly stingy with money.

Essay Skeleton # 2

Thesis: Over the years, I have learned to avoid strict teachers because they give too much homework, show no understanding when a student turns in assignments late, get impatient instead of helping when students don’t understand the subject matter, and often yell at the class.

Topic Sentence: At age six, I entered school.

Topic Sentence: Later on, I got into the sixth grade.

Topic Sentence: Eventually, I went on to high school.

Topic Sentence: Finally, I went to college.

Essay Skeleton # 3

Thesis: Without a doubt, narcissistic people are the types most vociferously to be avoided; whenever I happen to encounter one, I will automatically try to discontinue having to have any contact with that individual.

Topic Sentence: Narcissistic people always think that no one else could possibly be so physically stunning in appearance as they are.

Topic Sentence: It would seem that narcissistic people would like to believe that there are no other persons in the world who could win beauty contests and attract mates as easily as they could.

Topic Sentence: These people show in every way that they believe their beauty is more impressive than anyone else’s.
